Arribas farms old, neglected vineyards traditionally and sustainably, with minimal-intervention winemaking, working to show the world what this remote, underestimated corner of Portugal can really do.

'Belfo' is the local word for someone who talks with their mouth full — and this wine, made from a very old parcel in Peredo de Bemposta, where the soil brings limestone into the mix alongside the usual granite, sets out to express exactly that idea in liquid form.

The 2023 grapes were hand-picked on the 2nd of September into 20kg cases, then whole-bunch foot-trodden at the cellar. After a short 48-hour skin maceration, the grapes were pressed and the juice racked to used French oak, where both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation finished naturally. The wine spent 12 months ageing in barrel, followed by a further 6 months in stainless steel, before bottling in February.

'Palhete Belfo' is made in a traditional regional style — white and red grapes co-fermented together, following age-old local custom. It's an intense rosé, almost dark enough to pass for a light red, meant to be an easy, everyday drinking wine. The nose is fresh and floral with bright fruit, while the palate is juicy, savoury and refreshing — a natural match for cold cuts, roast chicken or a simple rustic soup. Made from a field blend of Tinta Gorda, Tinta Serrana, Bastardo, Rufete, Alvarelhão, Alfrocheiro, Verdelho, Malvasia and others, co-planted together. 12.5% alc.

Every year the label changes to support a different local association. The project's goal from the start has been to make authentic wines that express traditional technique, indigenous grape varieties and old vineyards, and 'Quilómetro' is a fine showcase of that craftsmanship — grown on ancient vineyards and crushed the traditional way, by foot in stone lagars.

It's a composite field blend of red and white grapes — Tinta Gorda, Tinta Serrana, Bastardo, Rufete, Alvarelhão, Alfrocheiro, Verdelho, Malvasia, Bastardo Branco, Posto Branco, Formosa and others — from vines over 70 years old, grown at 600 metres altitude. The mix of red and white varieties gives the wine freshness and finesse, while ageing in oak adds balance and depth.

The 2021 fruit was hand-picked into 20kg cases on the 22nd and 23rd of September, then transferred as whole bunches into a closed vat for 15 days of carbonic maceration. Foot-treading followed, lasting a further 15 days with the aim of minimal extraction throughout. Fermentation happened entirely on wild yeast, with no temperature control, before the must moved into chestnut and used French oak barrels for 12 months' ageing. The wine was then transferred back to stainless steel for an additional 18 months before bottling — unfined, unfiltered, and left as natural as possible. As a result, some sedimentation may appear over time.

The result is a lively, vivid ruby red wine with an oceanic, iodine-tinged nose layered over cherry, balsamic herbs and Mediterranean scrub — think thyme and rosemary — with lavender emerging on the finish. Made using ancestral sparkling wine methods, it has gentle effervescence and vibrant, lively acidity. This debut release includes disgorgement on select bottles to remove sediment — a bold twist for the more adventurous drinker.

The wine takes its character from the masseiras — a remarkable, almost-forgotten agricultural tradition found in Estela, Navais and Aguçadoura in Póvoa de Varzim, and in Apúlia and Fão in Esposende. These are large rectangular cavities dug into the coastal dunes, with vines planted around their edges to shield the fruit from Atlantic winds. Curiously, the water sitting at the centre of these cavities is fresh, not salt, and between the space, water and sargassum seaweed used to nourish the soil, conditions for growth are ideal. The shallow, sunken structure of the masseiras, combined with raised sand walls called valos and the surrounding vine barrier, creates a natural, greenhouse-like microclimate. The valos themselves were built by hand in the 18th century by Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Tibães, using excess sand from the dunes.

Tubarão Pét-Nat is a tribute to this distinctive, nearly-lost coastal winegrowing tradition — grown entirely in Atlantic sand.

Region: Northern Portugal, Póvoa de Varzim

Serving Temperature: Best served chilled at 8°C
