Adega Viúva Gomes Malvasia Branco DOC Colares 2022
The Adega Viúva Gomes Malvasia Branco DOC Colares 2022 is a remarkable expression of Portugal's most distinctive coastal wine region. Crafted from 100% Malvasia de Colares sourced from ungrafted vines rooted in the sandy Atlantic soils of Colares, this rare white wine captures the freshness, salinity and elegance that have made the region legendary among wine collectors and sommeliers.
Founded in 1808, Viúva Gomes remains one of the last great custodians of Colares' heritage, preserving a unique viticultural tradition where vineyards have escaped phylloxera thanks to their sandy soils. This wine is drawn from several parcels of old ungrafted Malvasia vines, fermented and matured to preserve both purity and the unmistakable maritime signature of the region.
Recognised by James Suckling as the #2 Wine in the Top 100 Wines of Portugal 2025, this is a benchmark Colares white that beautifully combines refinement, minerality and age-worthy structure.
Wine Description
Aromatically captivating, the wine opens with notes of quince, melon, lemon and white flowers, interwoven with distinctive impressions of sea spray, coastal herbs, spice and a subtle honeyed complexity. Beneath the fruit lies a savoury maritime character that recalls ocean air and crushed shells.
The palate is both delicate and intensely focused, offering flavours of apple, preserved citrus, salted nuts and orchard fruits wrapped around a chalky mineral core. Bright acidity drives the wine forward, while a fine powdery texture and persistent salinity provide depth and sophistication.
Elegant rather than powerful, the finish is long, crisp and saline, lingering with notes of citrus peel, wet stone and sea breeze. A truly distinctive white that showcases the singular terroir of Colares and the rare Malvasia de Colares grape at its finest.

Critical Acclaim
James Suckling – #2 Top 100 Wines of Portugal 2025
“A lovely nose of quince, melon, lemons and flowers. The palate is delicate and nuanced but also precise, focused, really elegant and detailed, with subtle density and good concentration throughout. Such a unique and refined personality.”
The Wine Front – Gary Walsh
“This is a very interesting wine. It carries a distinct sea spray note, almost a fino tang to it in that way, a subtle honey, spice and herb character, flavours are sort of like old lime, apple and salted nuts, a bright cut of acidity, a powdery grip to texture, with a crisp and salty finish of excellent length. I reckon this would shine with good jamon or seafood. Really like it.”
