Adega Viúva Gomes Malvasia Branco DOC Colares 2023 (500mL)
The Adega Viúva Gomes Malvasia Branco DOC Colares 2023 is a rare and captivating white wine from one of the world's most distinctive wine regions. Produced from 100% Malvasia de Colares, this remarkable wine comes from ungrafted vines aged between six and 130 years old, planted directly into the Atlantic sands of Colares. Protected from phylloxera by these unique sandy soils, the vineyards preserve a living link to Europe's pre-phylloxera wine heritage.
Founded in 1808, Adega Viúva Gomes is one of the last traditional producers safeguarding the historic identity of Colares. Hand-harvested, whole-cluster pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in both stainless steel and barrel, the wine is matured for 12 months in French oak, resulting in a refined expression of Malvasia de Colares that balances maritime freshness, mineral depth and impressive ageing potential.
Produced in very limited quantities, this is a compelling white for collectors and lovers of terroir-driven wines seeking something truly unique.
Wine Description
Golden-yellow in colour, the 2023 Malvasia Branco opens slowly in the glass, revealing layers of herbal aromas, citrus, orchard fruit and crushed stone. The nose carries a distinct mineral character, reflecting the influence of Colares' Atlantic climate and sandy coastal vineyards.
The palate is precise and beautifully balanced, combining fresh citrus and apple notes with a saline backbone and delicate acidity. Subtle texture from barrel ageing adds complexity without compromising the wine's purity and focus. As it develops, savoury mineral notes emerge, leading to a long, dry finish marked by a fascinating interplay of salty and gently bitter nuances.
Serious, elegant and unmistakably maritime, this is a singular expression of Malvasia de Colares that will reward both immediate enjoyment and extended cellaring.
