Beiorte Cidade Tinto 2021
A vibrant, elegant red from Portugal's Dão region, handcrafted by João Costa and his wife Bea in the mountain village of Santa Ovaia. The Beiorte project began in 2020 with the restoration of João's great-grandfather's historic cellar, born from a passion for authentic, artisanal wines that honour the region's old vineyards, traditional farming, and unique terroir.
The name "Cidade" is inspired by the old women who still climb the Portuguese hills every day — for Beiorte, a symbol of the daily hardship and resilience behind winemaking here. It's a genuinely delicious, fruit-forward red, with a layer of complexity from its time in oak.
Made from a traditional field blend — Tinta Pinheira, Trincadeira, Baga, Alfrocheiro and other varieties grown intertwined, a style once common throughout the Dão — from old vines on granite soils in the cool, high-altitude Alva sub-region near the Serra do Açor mountains. That combination of altitude, rugged terrain and cool climate gives the wine its lively acidity, finesse and distinctive mineral edge.
Made naturally with no added sulphite: the fruit is hand-harvested in late September, destemmed and macerated for 10 days, fermented on indigenous yeast, then aged 15 months in oak followed by 6 months in stainless steel. 12% alc, 750ml.
The name "Beiorte" comes from an old local dialect once spoken in the village, simply meaning "wine," and every cork is stamped "Beiorte Gido" — "good wine" — a small mark of the care behind each release.
Fresh and beautifully balanced, Cidade Tinto 2021 shows bright red berries, wild herbs, subtle spice and earthy complexity, framed by fine tannin and lively acidity — a soulful, modern take on traditional Dão winemaking, refined and full of character.
