Luis Seabra Xisto Cru Douro Tinto 2019
After a decade as winemaker at Niepoort, where he was behind some of the best-known and most highly rated wines to come out of the famed Douro and Port producer, Luís Seabra decided he no longer wanted to make wine to someone else's brief. So he started his own eponymous winery, setting about upending expectations of what Douro wine can be. He's a genuinely gifted winemaker — one who treats wine as a medium for land to speak through, rather than a vehicle for a house style.
Xisto Cru Tinto is part of Seabra's most terroir-driven series of wines. "Cru" means "raw" in Portuguese, and here the transmission of terroir is unadulterated and singular — every variable removed except the land itself, worked exclusively with spontaneous fermentation, native yeasts, and large-format, tight-grained oak.
The 2019 is a field blend from sustainably farmed vineyards planted between 1910 and 1933, in Cima Corgo — a subregion known for some of the sharpest day-to-night temperature swings in Portugal, giving the fruit extended hang-time. Vines are tended exclusively in mica schist soil, at elevations ranging from roughly 400 to 700 metres depending on the parcel.
Very deep, bold, youthful red-purple in colour. The bouquet leads with walnutty oak and a whiff of acetone, with dark fruit lurking beneath. Full-bodied and very firm, loaded with tannin that gives a solid grip through the finish and aftertaste — a trace of volatile acidity doesn't trouble the wine, and there's a fair amount of oak influence at play. Powerful and long, with big structure and plenty of muscle, this is a wine of serious intent, clearly built for the cellar. Impressive Wine.
