Description

Inspired by the potential of Pinot Gris when visiting Alsace, our 4th generation owner started making the first vintage of this wine in 1999. The name ‘Gris de’ is derived from ‘Gris’, which stands for the colour of the Koshu’s skins, and ‘de’ which means “of”.
We started making the wine with an eye on the future, that one day Japanese wines will be part of our dining culture, and our wines will accompany not just dining tables at home, but also in restaurants throughout the country, as a wine that is best in bringing out the characteristics of Koshu.
Gris de Koshu was also the label served at the celebration party to commemorate the Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine, Yoshinori Osumi, Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Institute of Technology.

This is a bit more fleshy and ripe than is usual, though that should be taken in context. Nashi pear, musk sticks, white pepper, sugared almond. It’s a more juicy expression of this wine, peach and pear, some dusty and powdery texture, some ginger too, with a ripe pear finish of good length, featuring some pear skin grip to close. Also, something of a nutty sake-like umami character too. Very good.

I had a haircut today, given I’d not had one for about six months, and I only mention that because my hairdresser is Japanese, and we were talking about Grace wines. She, curiously, likes big bold Barossa Shiraz. Anyway, her name is Yuki, and I found this interesting thing, which nearly illustrates how subtle and interesting Japanese things are (to generalise).
Pear, orange blossom, a little white pepper and ginger, lemongrass and lime leaf, and I really like this sort of exotic flourish the wine carries in this vintage. There’s pear and orange, a smidgen of sweetness, but also a pleasing dusty texture and grip. The finish is all pear and perfume, and offers excellent length. A delightful wine.
