Pato & Wouters Post Quercus Baga Tinto 2023

$73.00 inc. GST

100% Baga – Chalky clay mid-slopes with eastern orientation to the sun and a very intense Atlantic influence (only 15 km from the ocean). For this wine the grapes come from different small plots of Pato’s oldest vineyards (80 –130 years). These 3 centenary vineyards were purchased already some years ago and are fully converted to biodynamics.

The bunches are handpicked and hand-selected from the centenary vineyards in Bairrada (3 to 4 bunches/vine). Partly de-stemmed, fermented in open oak lagares with some extraction (pigeage). After the fermentation the wine is aged in 500 –600 used pipes and tonel (big cask) for 18 months. Prior to release, the wine further aged in bottle for 2 months.

Bright intense dark cherry red colour with a ruby rim and great viscosity. The aromas are very pure dominated by violets, strawberries and subtle smokiness, a bit of spice when the wine is young. After 5 to 7 years, the aromas get more complex, extremely energetic and with good concentration. The wine is almost generous with an intense structure and richness in harmony with the fine and noble tannins. It is neither too rough nor too heavy, the body has an extremely silky texture and the acidity brings energy and liveliness. The aftertaste is a pure delight.

Description

This very authentic Baga – “Post-Quercus” (after oak) – has certainly no make-up! It has been fermented and aged in amphorae. Amphorae because they are made of clay – part of the soli of our region. This clay allows a gentle micro-oxygenation which helps this Baga a lot to get silky fine tannins. The grapes are handpicked from different vineyards in Bairrada. Partly destemmed, fermented in amphorae (400–600 l) with very little extraction and long maceration on the skins. After the fermentation, the wine is aged in amphorae for 6 months.

Baga Bairrada Post Quercus 2023 – 93 / 100 Points

This has a lovely purity on the nose with aromas of red currants, blackcurrants, dried herbs and warm stones. The palate is medium-bodied and super drinkable, with supple tannins and a delicate red fruit finish. This comes from 80-year-old head-pruned vines planted on clay and limestone soil in Óis do Bairro. The wine fermented and aged in 400- and 700-liter clay amphorae. Love the drinkability. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink now.

Nossa Calcario Baga Tinto 2018 – 95 / 100 Points

From three small biodynamically cultivated chalky clay plots averaging 80-years-old. Bright as a button, buoyant yet grounded, with subtle, pine needle-edged crunchy red cherry, plus white and black pepper. A pronounced smoky, mineral undertow and incipient mushroom to the finish. Fine-framed, the incisive acidity and slender, refined, backbone of tannin in service of the fruit. Aged in used 500-600-litre French oak.
