‘Margaret’ is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 10% Malbec. Bright crimson in colour, the nose is extremely lush and aromatic, displaying a range of red and dark berry fruits combining with toasty French oak notes. The palate is exuberant, dense and concentrated– featuring ripe red and dark berry fruits, succulent middle palate, and plush tannin. A powerhouse of density and flavour, especially considering it’s 13.5% alcohol.
Woodlands ‘Margaret’ is sourced entirely from the Woodlands Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion comes from a slope on the south of Woodlands and wraps around a 90-degree radius from east to north. The fruit on this slope receives a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid-afternoon, leading to rich full-bodied wines.
The Merlot and Malbec plots that make up the remainder of ‘Margaret’ come from Woodlands’ west-facing slope of deep loam soil. This slope receives the most direct afternoon sunlight at Woodlands, and produces more spicy exotic fruit characters in the finished wine.
Vintage 2018 was absolutely ideal and was one of Margaret River’s best vintages. After a good amount of rainfall at the beginning of the growing season, flowering conditions were near-perfect. Great weather continued from mid-December through till the end of harvest. Just like the vintage itself, 2018 ‘Margaret’ is rich and warming.

“Deepish red colour with a glint of purple. The bouquet is superbly fragrant with a rose petal, subtle violet and red and dark fruit fragrance, edged with exotic spices. Very intense flavour, full-bodied, with a sweet fruit core, firm tannins and great elegance, its wonderful spectrum of flavour lasting very long on the palate. There’s a lot of detail here. A majestic cabernet blend, with a glorious future. (Grown on the original Woodlands Vineyard on Caves Road, planted 1973) 17 MAR 2020 Drink: 2020–2040”

80/10/10% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/malbec. Rooted in the very fabric of this wine is a savoury lining of spice. It is inescapable, and it’s what makes this wine a wonder. Is it better than the great 2014? Hard to say – the 2014 was pretty amazing. But this has all the ripe power and concentration of the vintage. The pure ‘cabernosity’ of this wine is a thing to marvel at. I keep coming back to the savoury layers … they are a defining characteristic of the house style.

A classy and subtle blend of currants, blackberries, black chocolate and hints of hazelnut throughout. Medium to full body. Firm and polished tannins. Fresh acidity. Some ash and cedar undertones to this. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 10% malbec. Drinkable, but better in five or six years. Screw cap.
